Nyungwe forest is one of the best preserved montane rain forest in central Africa located in the watershed to the west between the basin of River Congo and the basin of River Nile to the East.
Nyungwe forest is located in southern Rwanda bordering Burundi to the south and in the west Lake Kivu and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Nyungwe forest National park was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately 970 km2 of rain forest, Bamboo ,grasslands, swamps and bogs.
Nyungwe is one of the places in Rwanda a visitor should not miss due to its natural scenic wonders. For bird lovers, those who like to hike, primates lovers such as olive baboon, golden monkey, mangabey monkeys, chimpanzees, the only one forest canopy walk in East Africa, see orchids in the wild and many more.
Nyungwe National park contains 13 primate species, 85 mammal species, 32 amphibians, 38 reptile species, 270+ bird species, 1060+ plant species, Examples of primate species are ; Grey checked mangabey, Common chimpanzees, olive Baboon, Golden Monkeys, Silver monkeys, Vervet Monkeys, Red tailed Monkeys, Dent’s Mona monkey, L’Hoest’s Monkeys.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Nyungwe Forest: Chimp trekking in Nyungwe begin in the morning and one must be well prepared rain jacket, hiking boots, long-sleeved shirt, and drinking water, and you will set off in divided groups of people maximum 8 people to the forest with the help of a guide so as you enjoy the trek.
Grey Cheeked Mangabey and Ruwenzori Colobus Monkeytrekking Besides trekking chimpanzees you can also trek other primates like Grey checked Mangabey, L’Hoest’s Mountain Monkey, Blue Monkeys, Mona Monkey all these primate species are found in Nyungwe forest.
Birding in Nyungwe forest A trip in Nyungwe gives you an opportunity to see various bird species since it has 300 plus species and for bird lovers it is always advisable to move with a guide since they know more information about the forest and where to find birds .
