Murchison fall National park which was named by Sir Samuel Baker who explored thoroughly after the geologist Roderick Murchison the president of the Royal Geographical society and in 1952 it was established in the National park’s Act by the British administration.
Murchison falls National park is said to be the largest park in Uganda of the National parks and its is bisected by the largest River in Africa which is River Nile from East to West.
It is located in north west from the shores of Lake Albert spreading inland around the River Nile up to Karuma falls. Murchison falls National is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Location and getting to Murchison fall National park
It is located in the North west and by road north west of Kampala the capital city of Kampala the area is about 283 km and from Masindi the nearest large town to Kibanda area of the National park is 72 km(45 min) drive.
What to see and do at Murchison falls National park
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
You will find Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary 176 km North of Kampala on Gulu high way before Murchison falls park. It is not park of Murchison falls but can easily be visited while heading to the park . The main activity here is trekking Rhinos where by you are helped by the park rangers / guides who do the briefing and giving relevant information about the sanctuary and Rhinos here. Trekking is usually done on foot so that you can clearly see the Rhinos at a very close range for your great experince.
In Uganda this is the only place where you will trek White Rhinos.
Chimpanzee trekking- Budongo forest
Budongo forest is the best place for chimpanzee trekking and you have great opportunity to trek chimpanzees here. You can do all day chimpanzee habituation in Budongo forest during the off seasons, birding , nature walks and Hiking also are done on the on the trails of the forest for a few hours of a day.
Chimpanzee trekking is best done by adding it on your last day in Murchison falls or adding a day on your safari to Murchison falls.
Wild Game drive and Nocturnal game drive
On the drive in Murchison falls National park you will see different wildlife, bird species in abundance, wildlife include; Leopard, Lion, Elephant, Giraffes, Uganda Kob, Buffaloes, Antelopes, birds include rare shoe bill stock, great blue Turaco, White- thighed hornbill, Goliath heron and many more. The wild game drives are usually done in the morning and evening so that you can see various wildlife and birds as some animals are waking up for their first hunt and when they are gathering slowly to rest in the evening. It takes usually 2-3 hours.
The Nocturnal game drive is usually done after darkness as set, during the drive you can see various predators, like Leopard, Lion, Hyenas and many more and this is something you should not miss on your visit to the park.
Boat safari to the bottom of Murchison falls
During this boat safari you will encounter various aquatic animals birds and species of butterflies. Wildlife here is always at the banks of the Nile river and shores of the river. And then visit the bottom of falls. This is the must activity when you visit Murchison falls and it takes about 2- 3 hours.
Visit of the top of the falls Hike
The waterfall hike is a hike for about 45-mins and then be refreshed by beautiful rainbow formed by the mists from the Nile, feel the ground shake and vibrate under your feet which is so amazing.
Birding
Birding can be done in various areas / landscapes of Murchison falls like Savannah, Riverine forest, in Budongo forest, and Rabongo When you go for a guided walk you can spot more birds because guides areas where birds live and the relevant information. This can be done by vehicle, boat or on foot. Different species of birds are found in this park : the water savannah and many more.
Forest walk- Rabongo and Hiking – Budongo forest
This can be arranged and its mainly better for bird lovers since Rabongo forest is a paradise for them. If it is a guided you can also spot chimpanzees, monkeys and other primates .
In Murchison fall Budongo forest is one of the best places to Hike and on a hike you can also encounter, birds, wildlife and monkeys ,you can also decide to go for a walk in Chobe area with your guide.
Fishing village and Kabiro salt gardens
This can be arranged and a license for fishing is a must to buy it, you can fish in the river bank or either the shores or one of the pools.
This is a steep hike down and up in the western Rift Valley Escarpment that requires to physically fit.You enter the fishing village on the lake where salt has been made for the local Bunyoro kingdom.
Visits can be earlier arranged as you take a route from Murchison falls and you spend an overnight in Hoima.
