Bwindi Impenetrable forest is known as home of Mountain gorillas. The main activity done here by tourist is trekking Gorillas and this is commonly done every day and hour in this forest.
In 1964 it was called a reserve and designated as an animal sanctuary so as it can provide protection for the mountain gorillas and in 1966 two other forest reserves became part of the main reserve which led to increasing in area to almost 321 sq. km. In 1991 it was designated as a national park it was renamed Bwindi impenetrable National park .
It was declared most notably to protect mountain gorillas and a range of species in it. The park is at the edge of the western Rift valley in highest parts of Kigezi Highlands and has a very rugged topography with narrow valleys intersected by rivers and step hills.
Bwindi has a tropical climate and the peak rain fall occurs from March – April and from September to November.

The park is located south west of Uganda and its and its 8-10 hour drive from Kampala capital city of Uganda, and its is known of having half of the worlds endangered Mountain gorillas. The main town to the park is Kibale. The park is composed of 331 sq. km of both montane and low land forest and it is accessible only on foot.
Species found in Bwindi Impenetrable forest National park
Bwindi is said to have the richest faunal communities in East Africa. There are 120 mammal species in the park and 10 of them are primates and more than 45 are small mammals. 48 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies, 25+ species of frogs and many more. Bwindi forest is most notable for the 400 Bwindi gorillas which is half of the world’s population. The park is also a sanctuary of the colobus monkeys and chimpanzees. Species in Bwindi include; Black and white colobus, Red – tailed monkeys, vervets, African green broadbill, African Elephant, L’Hoest’s Monkey, carnivores which include; Africa golden cat, lions, African civet, side-striped jackal and cream banded swallowtail. Also they are many fish species in the Rivers and streams.
