Mgahinga Gorilla National park is one of the smallest National parks in Uganda which is located southern Uganda and known as a home of one habituated group of gorillas and also a home of three volcanoes, Gahinga, Sabinyo and Muhabura.
Mgahinga Gorilla National park is also a home of 76 species of mammals besides mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, some of tare forest Buffalo, Bush pig, Bush-bucks, Giant forest hog, forest Elephant, Golden cats and others however, these are hardly spotted due to the thick forest vegetation. You can also explore the cave, climb the volcanoes, trek golden and blue monkeys, visit the cultural villages and as well relax in some beautiful lakes.
In 1991 is when the park was made and the tribes of people living around the park are the Bafumbira who are peasant farmers and the Pym who once lived in the park area and carried out hunting and they used to depend on wildlife.
Mgahinga Gorilla National park is a home of one habituated gorilla group which keep on moving with in the three parks , the volcano park of Rwanda , Virunga National park of DRC and of course Uganda.
Things to see and do
Gorilla trekking There is one habituated gorilla group I Mgahinga park and the time spent with gorillas while sighted during trekking is usually one hour .The family of gorillas found here is Nyakagezi. This creates an amazing experience and at times visitors save some money when they start their safari from Kigali. Golden monkey trekking Like gorillas and chimpanzees, Golden Monkeys are habituated and in the all Africa Golden monkey trekking is only in Uganda and Rwanda. For a visitor who goes to Mgahinga should not miss this activity which is really a great experience. Volcano Hiking
When you do the hiking in Mgahinga park this will give a great experience because you get great views of Virungas and at times you can enter the three countries on mount Sabinyo.
Volcano climbing three extinct volcanoes and one of them is Sabinyo which takes eight hours, Mount Gahinga 6-7 hours round trip and Mount Muhabura 9 hours round trip.
Birding
This park is not only a volcanoes but also a wet land area with 100+ recorded species of birds and with a help of guide visitors can be able to see more bird species since guides very well know where to find different species. Some of the birds that can be seen are: Rwenzori Turaco, Paradise Fly-catcher, Rwenzori Batis, Firefinch, Stone Chat, White-naped Raven, Olive woodpecker, Africa Hill Babbler, Strange Weaver, Western Green Tinkerbird, Rwenzori Nightjar, Speckled Mousebird, Grey- capped Warbler and many more.
Batwa Forest Trail Here you will visit the Batwa people learn their culture , life style, how they dance, and all activities they did in longtime ago, with the help of their guide you will know all the information about these people and this will create a great amazing experience.
Garama Cave
This was a place where the Batwa people used to hide during the war and it was also used for other activities like resting and many others. accommodation
