Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Tracking Day Trip is an excursion from Kampala or Entebbe to a chimpanzee Orphanage located on Lake Victoria. This island is located 23 kilometers offshore from Entebbe.
departs daily from Kampala (the capital of Uganda). Kampala is located only 35 kilometers away from Entebbe while the orphanage is only 23 Kilometers offshore from Entebbe. The trip also involves a boat ride that takes approximately one hour each way.
Surrounded by the peaceful waters of Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to 48 orphaned chimps rescued from throughout Uganda. Island facilities offer day and overnight visitors an exceptional opportunity to closely observe and interact with these fascinating great apes in this unique setting.
This 100 acre forested island provides a safe haven for 48 orphaned chimpanzees that are now free to roam their island thanks to project leaders Uganda Wildlife Education Center ( UWEC ) and other concerned organizations that raised funds for the project. It offers a unique opportunity for close viewing of chimpanzees in their natural environment.
Pre – arranged supplementary feeding times (11.00 am & 3.00 pm each day) brings the chimpanzees to you within meters of the raised walkway specially designed for easy viewing and provides excellent photographic opportunities
Upon arrival at the sanctuary, you will be directed to the visitor’s center where you will be given an introduction to the project, its history. On each of the two types of day visits (half day and full day), you will receive an educational orientation by a chimpanzee caregiver and view a feeding of the chimpanzees (full day visitors will view 2 feedings) from the visitors’ raised platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence.
Additionally, those on the full day excursion will enjoy lunch, an optional extra if pre- ordered directly with CSWCT or through the booking agent. Day visitors to the sanctuary at Ngamba Island are no longer permitted to bring packed lunches and drinks with them to the island.
Day visitors to the island are offered the following items, all prepared and served by island staff at an extra cost:
Ugandan Buffet
Selection of salads and sandwiches
Assortment of drinks: water, sodas, wine, spirits
Assortment of freshly baked Ngamba confections (Prices vary)
In addition to the chimp-related activities listed above, while on the island, day visitors have a choice of any of the following: swimming on the equator, visiting a neighboring fishing village, bird watching, experiencing other wildlife encounters, or simply sunbathing and relaxing.
